Capaldi Drills Grand Slam as Setters Win a Pair Against Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. – Sophomore Cory Capaldi combined to go 6-9 with a grand slam homerun, four runs scored, and six RBIs as the Setters swept a pair of contests over the Golden Knights. Pace took the nine-inning NE-10 Southwest Division game 8-3 before winning the non-league, seven-inning contest 10-9. Following the sweep, the Setters advance to 15-10, 8-1 NE-10 Southwest while the Golden Knights fall to 5-15, 2-6 NE-10 Southwest.

The Setters got the offense going early as they plated a run in the top of the first inning. Senior Tom Midolo blasted a two-out triple to right center field to give Pace a baserunner. Midolo later scored on a Saint Rose fielding error to give the Setters a 1-0 advantage.

Senior Robert Rizzitelli got the start for Pace and shut the Golden Knights down in the first two innings, allowing no hits while fanning one batter.

Saint Rose added a trio of runs, but the Setters responded to tie the game up in the fifth inning. Andrew Coffey led off the frame with a double to center field. After Frank Mayo reached on a fielding error which gave Pace runners at second and third. Midolo drove in the first run on an RBI-single to the pitcher before Nick LoBello tied it up with a
sacrifice fly.

The next inning the Setters climbed back on top. Capaldi sent a single up the middle and advanced to third on back-to-back fielder's choices. Coffey cranked an RBI-single to the shortstop to give Pace a 4-3 lead over the Golden Knights.

Pace broke it open in the eighth inning. Michael Gulino led off the frame with a single that was quickly followed by a sacrifice bunt. Coffey came up next and drilled a single to plate Gulino. After Mayo was hit by a pitch the Setters had a pair of baserunners. Back-to-back RBI-singles by LoBello and John Kukura gave the Setters a 7-3 lead.

Capaldi opened the ninth and final inning with a leadoff double and was driven in two batters later by a Brett Bittiger single.

Coffey led Pace with a 4-6 mark at the dish with two runs scored and two RBIs. Midolo went 2-6 with a run and an RBI while LoBello went 1-4 with two RBIs.

Rizzitelli (2-1) got the win after tossing six innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits with six Ks. Dylan Mouzakes tossed two innings and allowed no runs and just one hit with a strikeout. Josh Grant tossed the final inning and allowed just one hit and no runs.

In the nightcap, the Setters once again struck in the first inning. Paul Piccolino drew a walk and was driven in two batters later when LoBello sent a double to right field.

With Saint Rose up 2-1, the Setters fought back to tie things even at 2-2 in the third inning. Midolo drew a walk before LoBello connected on a single to center field. Two batters later, Tyler Bivona drove an RBI-single to right field to tie the game.

The Setters struck for a monster inning in the fifth behind the bat of Capaldi. A leadoff single by Piccolino was followed up by a LoBello single. After Kukura roped the third base hit of the frame, the Setters had the bases loaded with one out. Two batters later, Capaldi crushed a grand slam homerun to left field to give Pace a 6-2 lead.

The Setters kept their foot on the gas in the sixth frame. After two quick outs, Pace began their rally. Kukura hit another base hit that was followed by a Bivona free pass. Next up was Capaldi who ripped a 2-RBI double to right field. Domenick Luongo continued the crucial rally when he came up next and blasted a RBI-single to right field, putting Pace up 9-2.

The Setters added one more run in the seventh and final inning of the game. After Midolo drew a walk and swiped second base, Kukura sent a single to center field to drive in Midolo.

Capaldi led Pace behind a stellar day at the plate, hitting 3-4 with two runs scored and six RBIs, four on the grand slam homer. LoBello, Kukura, and Luongo each went 3-5 with an RBI.
