Baseball Drops NE-10 Contest Against New Haven

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Setters fell to NE-10 Southwest Divisional opponent New Haven on Tuesday by a final score of 2-1. Following the loss, Pace falls to 17-17, 9-6 NE-10 Southwest while New Haven advances to 14-12, 9-6 NE-10 Southwest.

Junior righty Josh Garran started the game and looked to continue his dominant 2015 campaign. In the top of the first, he set the Chargers down in order, fanning the first batter before forcing a fly out and a groundout.

In the bottom of the first, the Setters were threatening with runners on first and third after Paul Piccolino was hit by a pitch, and John Kukura sent a rocket back to the pitcher for a single. However, a double play later ended the inning and saw the Setters come up empty.

In the top second, the Setters defense came up big. With one out and a runner on third, the Chargers hit a fly out to center and Kukura absolutely gunned the baserunner out at the plate to end the inning.

In the bottom of that frame the Setters once again had a promising rally. Michael Gulino hit a one-out single to give Pace a baserunner. Two batters later, Frank Mayo sent an infield single to third base to give the Setters runners at the corners. A fielder's choice ended the rally during the next at bat.

In the third frame, Garran stayed hot as he set the Chargers down in order, adding two K's.

Then in the fifth, Garran once again tossed a perfect inning as a pair of fly outs bookended his fourth strikeout.

Trailing by two runs in the six, the Setters responded to cut the deficit in half. Kukura smoked a ground-rule double to left center field, and advanced to third on a fly out during the next at bat. Senior Tom Midolo came up next and sent an infield RBI-single to the second baseman to score Kukura and force action to 2-1.

Senior Josh Grant entered in relief of Garran in the top of the seventh inning. After entering the game with one out and runners on first and second, the Setters allowed the next baserunner to reach on an error. However, with the bases loaded and one out, Grant was able to force a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and hold the Chargers scoreless.

In the top of the eighth inning, senior Jonathan Chudy entered the game in a tight spot with runners on the corners and two outs. New Haven's top batter took the dish, and Chudy struck him out on three straight pitches to end the threat.

In the top of the ninth frame, the leadoff batter for the Chargers reached on an error. After the runner advanced to third on a fly out, and Chudy walked the next better, New Haven had runners at the corners with two outs. Chudy dialed back to strikeout the next batter and end the Charger threat.

Kukura led the way for Pace with a 3-4 mark at the dish with a double and a run scored. Midolo went 1-4 with the game's only RBI. Gulino and Mayo added the final two hits of the game.

Garran (4-2) took the loss after throwing 6.1 solid innings of work, allowing just two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Grant tossed 1.1 innings of relief and allowed no earned runs on one hit. Chudy tossed the game's final 1.1 innings and allowed no runs or hits while fanning two batters.

The Setters return to the diamond on Thursday, April 30th when they travel to face Dominican at 3:30 p.m. The game will be played in Provident Bank Park in Pomona, N.Y.
