WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior pitcher
Tim Deegan allowed just one earned run over 5.1 innings to help the Setters earn a victory in the final of a three-game set against American International. Following the win, Pace advances to 16-14, 9-4 NE-10 Southwest while the Yellow Jackets fall to 9-19, 4-7 NE-10 Southwest.
American International was unable to get on the board in the first three frames. Deegan shut the Yellow Jackets down, allowing just one hit while striking out four batters.
The Setters made their rally in the fourth when the offense got going.
Frank Mayo led off the frame with a single to left. Two batters later,
Nick LoBello gave Pace runners at first and second when he sent a single to center field. After an AIC error gave Pace the bases loaded,
Domenick Luongo gave the Setters a 1-0 lead when he drew an RBI-walk.
Isaiah Rivera came up next and also walked in a run. Senior
Brett Bittiger registered the key hit of the day when he sent a two-run single to right field with the bases juiced.
The Yellow Jackets added one run in the fifth inning, but the Setters eventually won the contest 4-1.
Bittiger went 1-4 with a pair of RBIs. Luongo went 1-2 with two walks, an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. LoBello continued his impressive series with a 3-4 mark at the dish, adding a run scored. Mayo went 2-4 with a run scored.
Deegan (2-1) picked up the win after tossing 5.1 innings, surrendering just four hits and one earned run while striking out four.
Ryan Aquino tossed 1.2 innings of relief and allowed no hits or runs while adding three Ks. Senior
Jonathan Chudy picked up his first save of the year after pitching the final two innings, surrendering no runs and just three hits while adding a trio of strikeouts.
Pace returns to the field on Wednesday, April 22
nd when they travel to Garden City, N.Y. for a key game against NE-10 Southwest rival Adelphi. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
