WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior
Tom Midolo crushed a homer in the fourth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Setters fell to New Haven in 11 innings for just their second NE-10 Southwest loss of the season. After the loss, Pace falls to 15-11, 8-2 NE-10 Southwest while New Haven advances to 8-9, 4-3 NE-10 Southwest.
Senior
Jonathan Chudy started on the hill for the Setters. After allowing a pair of hits in the first frame and one run to score, he found his grove and fanned back-to-back batters to end the inning. Then in the second, New Haven was able to load the bases with no outs, but Chudy battled back and surrendered just one run on a sacrifice fly.
The Setters chipped away at the deficit in the top of the third when Midolo led off with his team-leading fourth homerun.
After the Chargers tacked on another run in the third, the Setters trailed 3-1. They cut the New Haven advantage to just one in the top of the sixth inning.
Paul Piccolino led off the inning with a single to right and was driven in on the very next at bat when
Michael Gulino cranked an RBI-double to left center.
The Setters began another rally in the seventh inning and were able to tie the game at 3-3.
John Kukura started it with a single to short. After getting into scoring position on an error by New Haven, he was driven in by
Nick LoBello during the next at bat when he drilled an RBI-double to left field.
After the game entered extra innings, Pace's biggest opportunity came in the top of the 11
th. After a pair of hits and a hit by pitch, the Setters had the bases loaded with one out. Once consecutive outs ended the inning, New Haven came up to bat and scored the game-winning run on an RBI-single.
Midolo went 3-6 with one run scored and an RBI behind his solo jack. Kukura went 4-6 with a run scored while Gulino and LoBello each recorded three hits with an RBI apiece.
Chudy finished the day with seven innings pitched, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out eight. Senior
Josh Grant tossed three innings of relief and allowed no runs and just two hits.
Dylan Mouzakes picked up the loss after tossing a third of an inning, allowing one earned run on one hit.
Pace returns to the diamond on Thursday, April 16
th when they travel to Sparkill, N.Y. for a meeting with St. Thomas Aquinas.
