Softball Uses Long Ball in Sweep Against Le Moyne

BRIARCLIFF, NY- The Setters blasted five homeruns including a pair off the bat of freshman Tara Bernstein as the Pace Softball swept a doubleheader against the Le Moyne Dolphins. Pace improves to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division, while the Dolphins fall to 7-3 and 1-1 in division play.
 
The Dolphins got on the board in the opening inning with a pair of runs. The Setters rallied in the top of the second as they loaded the bases with no outs. Bernstein got Pace on the board with a run scoring single and the Setters tied it as Jeane Drury was hit a pitch to force in a run.
 
The Setters took the lead in the third with five runs. Nikole Larm got the rally going as she blasted a one-out solo homerun to left field. The Setters weren't finished in the frame as Amanda Limon followed with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Bernstein hit the first of her two long balls in the game to push the Setters in the lead 5-2. Pace plated a pair more as Drury and Larissa Labs singled to put runners on second and third. Natalie Gellos singled in Drury, while Labs scored on a wild pitch.
 
Pace added to their lead in the fourth with three more runs. Ashley Lew reached on an error and Larm doubled, while Limon was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Two runs scored on wild pitched, while Labs doubled in the third run of the inning. The Dolphins chipped away with two runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh but starter Jaclyn Flores closed the door as she tossed a complete game.
 
Flores (3-0) remained unbeaten this season as she tossed a complete game, allowing five runs on six hits, while striking out two. Drury went 3-for-4 in the opener, while Larm went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Bernstein went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Limon scored three runs in the game.
 
In the nightcap, the Setters got on the board first as Gellos reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on a Surina Sandhu double. Le Moyne answered in the third with a two-run homerun to take a 2-1 lead.
 
In the fourth, the Setters rallied as they loaded the bases with two outs. Drury launched a two-out grand slam to center field for a 5-2 Pace lead. The Setters added to their lead in the fifth as Gellos and Sandhu lead off the inning with back-to-back doubles.
 
Le Moyne got two runs back in the fifth but Caitlin McCann limited the damage in the game to keep Pace in the lead at 6-4. The Setters added to their lead in the sixth with a pair of homeruns. Bernstein led off the inning with a solo shot, while Gellos hit a two-run shot following a Labs walk.
 
In game two, Bernstein, Gellos and Sandhu all went 2-for-4 with Gellos scoring three runs. On the hill, Kaitlynn Nelson improve to 3-3 on the season as she tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while striking out two. McCann picked up her first save of the season, going the final 2 2/3 innings allowing two hits and struck out two.
 
The Setters host Adelphi on Wednesday, April 1 in an NE-10 SW Division doubleheader at 3 pm on the Briarcliff campus.
