Softball Downs Southern Connecticut in NE-10 SW Division Opener

BRIARCLIFF, N.Y.- Hana Wright had a key two-run double in the opening inning as the Setters opened up Northeast-10 Southwest Division play with a 5-2 win over the Southern Connecticut Owls. The Setters improve to 9-2 on the season and 1-0 in the NE-10 SW Division, while the Owls fall to 4-8 and 0-1 in division play.

The Setters got the bats going in the opening inning as they plated all five of their runs. Shelby Yung drew a walk and moved to third as Larissa Labs reached base on an error. Jeane Drury singled in Yung for the first run of the game. Pace successfully pulled off the delayed double steals as Labs scored to make it 2-0

Pace wasn't finished in the inning as Natalie Gellos walked and Surina Sandhu singled to load up the bases. Ashley Lew drew a walk to force in Drury with the third run, while Wright ripped a ground-rule double to drive in two more runs.

The Owls chipped away with a run in the third and the fifth and loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh. Reliever Kaitlynn Nelson closed the door, forcing a groundout for the final out of the game as she earned her first save of the season.

Starter Caitlin McCann (4-1) tossed five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) and six hits, while recording one strikeout. Nelson pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and registering a pair of strikeouts. Drury (2-for-3) and Sandhu (2-for-4) led the Setter offense.
