Dodge’s Strong Play Continues in Pace Women’s Basketball’s Victory over New Haven

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. Kirsten Dodge (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey) registered a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds to help the Pace University women's basketball team defeat the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Goldstein Fitness Center Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Setters improve to 5-2, 2-2 NE-10, while New Haven falls to 4-4, 2-3 NE-10.
 
The Chargers jumped out to a 4-2 lead, as India Dotson made two layups, while the Setters went to Dodge early on to finish with a layup of her own off a post move. Both teams struggled to score throughout the period, but Dodge went on to score six of the Setters' 11 points as they led by two after the first.
 
Both teams matched with a three to open the second frame, with New Haven's Quana Smith connecting from deep at the 9:52 mark and Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) answering back with a three of her own. The Chargers then went on a 13-4 run, led by led by Lauren Hebert who score 10 second-period points, giving New Haven a 25-18 lead. With three seconds left in the period, Rosalbo finished a layup to cut the Charger's lead to 25-20 heading into the break.
 
Dodge finished a layup assisted by Rubin to begin the third quarter. The Setters then began to get in a rhythm as Rosalbo drained a deep ball, and Rubin knocked a mid-range jump shot and two free throws to tie the game at 29-29. Rosalbo then went to the line for two free throws of her own. She connected on the first, but missed the second, which was grabbed by Dodge and put back in. Dodge finished two more layups to give the Setters a 36-33 lead. Continuing their stellar play through the third quarter, Shanice Maynard (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson / Coppin State) knocked down a triple to send the Setters into the fourth with a 46-36 advantage.
 
New Haven's Smith opened up the fourth period with a three at the 9:34 mark. At 6:26, Alexandria Kerr made both of her free throws to shrink the Setters' lead to 46-41. Rubin connected on a three at 5:48 for the Setters' first points of the period. Rosalbo followed that with a triple of her own to push the lead out to 52-41. Dodge made a layup at the 1:37 mark to keep the Setters up by 11 with a score of 58-47. New Haven still fought back by making two free throws, and a three by Hebert cut the deficit to six points with 54 seconds left in regulation. Rosalbo answered by forcing a New Haven foul and making both free throws. New Haven's Smith made a three with 5 seconds left but it was not enough, as Pace held on for a 60-55 win.
 
Dodge added three blocks to her impressive afternoon, and Rubin matched her team lead with 16 points on the day. Rubin also led the Setters by dishing out five assists. Rosalbo matched a career-high with 13 points.
 
New Haven's Hebert scored a game-best 17 points on Saturday. Kerr also pulled down a game-high 10 boards.
 
The Setters got a big boost from their reserves with 36 points, while the Charger bench contributed just six. The Setters also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Chargers, 42-36, and outscoring them in the paint, 22-10.
 
The Setters return to action Monday, Dec. 7 when they host the University of Bridgeport in the Goldstein Fitness Center at 7 p.m.
