SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman guard
Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) scored a season-high 17 points, but the Pace University women's basketball fell to American International College (AIC), 62-45, in Northeast-10 Conference action Wednesday evening at the Butova Gymnasium. The Setters fall to 4-2 on the season and 1-2 against the NE-10 with the loss, while AIC improves to a perfect 5-0 and 4-0 against the conference.
Monteleone led all scorers in the game, and was the leading scorer for Pace in each half of the game. She also dished out three assists and grabbed two rebounds in the game.
The Setters led, 9-7, midway through the first quarter, but the Yellow Jackets turned it around to finish up the frame with a 9-0 run and take a 16-9 advantage at the end of the period. An 11-0 stretch for the Yellow Jackets in the second stanza put them up, 34-17. Each team managed another five points for the rest of the quarter, resulting in a 39-22 lead for the home team heading into halftime.
The Setters came out of the locker room with some renewed momentum, and scored 12 of the first 15 points in the third quarter to cut the deficit to nine at 42-33. The teams then played even for the rest of the period, and AIC held a 51-41 edge heading into the fourth.
The Yellow Jackets picked up 9-of-10 points to open the final frame, jumping out to a 60-42 lead. The Setters were unable to string a rally together, eventually falling by the final score of 62-45.
Junior center
Kirsten Dodge (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey) pulled down 10 rebounds to lead all players in the game, adding six points as well. Grad-student guard
Shanice Maynard (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson / Coppin State) helped out with a game-high six assists. Sophomore guard
Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) banked seven points and a team-high three steals.
Brianna Bishop, Kamika Mason and Dana Watts each registered 11 points to lead AIC on Wednesday. Sydney Tepley added a team-best nine rebounds, and three different Yellow Jackets picked up three steals.
The Setters will look to bounce back when they return home on Saturday, Dec. 5, to host the University of New Haven in NE-10 play at the Goldstein Fitness Center. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
