ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Fueled by a dominant defense that held the Lions to just 25.9 % (14-54) shooting, 31.6 % (6-19) from distance, the Setters were able to pick up a 76-48 non-conference victory on the road over Molloy. The Setters didn't allow Molloy to score more than 13 in any quarter. Following the win, Pace advances to 4-1 while the Lions fall to 1-4.
Pace kicked things off with a quick 6-1 run thanks to junior
Kirsten Dodge (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey) who either scored or assisted on all six points. She connected on two early baskets before
Shanice Maynard (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson / Coppin State) took a Dodge feed in the paint and finished with an easy layup. After Molloy knotted things even at 6-all, Maynard took advantage of the soft Lion defense and drained back-to-back triples. She added her third shot from distance later that quarter to help Pace climb out to a 17-12 lead after one.
The Lions cut the deficit to just three early in the second before Pace scored seven straight. Senior
Jaclyn Oskam (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central / Quinnipiac University) connected on a midrange jumper before splashing her first three of the game. Sophomore
Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) capped off the run to stretch the Setter advantage to 10 when she banked in a layup at the 6:21 mark. Oskam converted one more shot from deep before the half came to an end, as Pace took a 29-24 lead into halftime.
Maynard led all Setters in the opening half with 11 points, adding three rebounds and two assists. Oskam contributed eight points with two rebounds while Dodge added six points with three rebounds, two assists, and a block.
Oskam hit her third three-pointer of the game to give the Setters their first points of the second half, and stretch their lead to seven. After Molloy cut the Setter lead to just a pair, Rubin took over. She scored seven straight points, hitting two layups before ending the rally with a deep ball. Molloy added a point from the stripe before the Setters broke it open late in the quarter. Freshman
Chelsea Schultz (Commack, NY/Commack) scored a basket that was followed by back-to-back threes by Rubin and freshman
Stefanie Svoboda (Ossining, NY/Ossining). Senior
Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) hit a layup on an assist by Rubin to end the run. Rubin totaled 10 points in the third quarter. After Shultz added a shot from distance, Pace entered the fourth stanza leading 54-37.
Dodge netted back-to-back baskets to open the game's final frame and stretch the lead to 21. After Molloy responded with a pair of free throws, Dodge added another basket. The Setters coasted to a win behind a 22 point fourth quarter. They outscored their opponent 10-1 in the game's final 1:47. Seniors Oskam and
Rachel Dortch (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) each banked in layups while freshmen
Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) and
Brianna Nickson (Haledon, NJ/Passaic County Technical) both connected from distance.
The Setters shot lights out in the second half, connecting on 68.9 % (20-29) of shots from the field and 63.6 % (7-11) from distance.
