Sher Fuels Pace Women’s Basketball to Victory over LIU Post in Home Opener

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Senior Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) led all scorers with 18 points to help the Pace University women's basketball team open the season with a 71-56 victory over LIU Post on Saturday in the Setters' home opener at the Goldstein Fitness Center. With the win, the Setters jump out to a 1-0 record, while the Pioneers fall to 0-1.
 
The Setters went on a quick 6-0 run early in the first quarter that was sparked by a Sher and-one. After she converted the free throw, senior Jaclyn Oskam (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central / Quinnipiac University) splashed a deep ball on an assist by Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) to give Pace an 8-2 lead.
 
LIU Post cut the lead to 8-6 before the Setters scored nine straight points. Sher started the rally as she splashed a jumper on a G. Rubin assist. Minutes later, Christina Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic / Iona College) stole a Pioneer pass before talking it the length of the court for a fast-break layup. Senior Shanice Maynard (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson / Coppin State) added a layup before Stefanie Svoboda (Ossining, NY/Ossining) ended the rally with a triple, giving Pace a 17-6 advantage.
 
Early in the second, G. Rubin scored five straight points behind a layup and a three, each of which were assisted by Maynard. With 6:15 remaining in the half, Sher scored six straight Pace points as she hit a pair of jumpers and converted a pair of free throws at the stripe. Sher added a layup in the final 30 seconds of the half to give the Setters a 41-18 lead at the break.
 
The Setters added a pair of early layups in the third quarter, one from G. Rubin and another from sophomore Geena Rosalbo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis). Minutes later, Sher converted another and-one, with G. Rubin picking up the assist. Sher added another layup on the very next Setter possession.
 
Pace took a 59-41 lead into the fourth frame. With 4:03 to go in the contest, Rubin chipped in four straight points as she connected on a layup before sinking a pair of free throws. Rosalbo converted on three free throws in the final 20 seconds of the game to help the Setters win, 71-56.
 
Sher added four rebounds and three steals to her team-high 18 points. G. Rubin and C. Rubin each scored 11 points with G. Rubin adding four assists and two steals. Maynard scored eight points with five assists and four rebounds while Rosalbo ended with five points, five rebounds, and three assists.
 
The Setters return to the hardwood on Sunday, Nov. 15, when the wrap up play in the NE-10/ECC Challenge. Pace will square off with the New York Institute of Technology at 1:30 p.m. in the Goldstein Fitness Center.
