Gabriella Rubin Scores 16 in Loss to Southern New Hampshire

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman guard Gabriella Rubin scored 16 points on 6-11 shooting in the Setters 64-63 loss against NE-10 rival Southern New Hampshire. Following the loss, the Setters fall to 8-8, 3-6 NE-10 while the Penmen advance to 9-8, 4-7 NE-10.

The Setters jumped out to an early lead in the game after a Rachel Dortch jumper and a pair of Margo Hackett baskets led to Pace scoring the first seven points of the contest. The Penmen cut the Setter advantage to just two points until sophomore Kirsten Dodge connected on a jumper with 15:12 remaining in the half. With 11:27 remaining in the half and the Setters up just one, freshman Geena Rosalbo forced the steal that led to another Dodge bucket. Later in the half, the Setters faced their largest deficit of the game, trailing the Penmen by three until senior Jaclyn Oskam drilled the long range shot to knot things up at 18-18. Both teams traded buckets over the next five minutes until Pace went on a run late in the half to separate themselves. G. Rubin converted a free throw to tie things at 24 with 3:35 remaining, and spark a 12-4 run for the Setters to close out the half. Her and Hackett each scored four points in the key rally that saw Pace claim a seven point advantage at the break.

Junior Yuni Sher scored the first bucket of the half for Pace on a layup assisted by Rosalbo to advance the lead to seven points with 18:41 remaining. Moments later, following a Southern New Hampshire three-pointer, G. Rubin connected on a layup, drew a foul, and converted the free throw for the and-one. The Penmen tied things up with 14:41 remaining but G. Rubin again answered with a shot from behind the arc to claim a three-point lead. Southern New Hampshire went up by three points with 8:14 remaining when sophomore Christina Rubin drilled the spot up three to knot things even at 53-apiece. Southern New Hampshire went up by as many as seven points before Pace began the comeback that started with a G. Rubin layup, followed by a triple and an and-one by C. Rubin on the next two Setter possessions. The 8-0 Pace run saw the Setters claim a one-point lead with 44 seconds remaining. In the next 30 seconds of play, Southern New Hampshire hit a pair of free throws that proved to be the difference as the Setters fell by a final score of 64-63.

G. Rubin added six rebounds and three assists to her team-best 16 points. Sophomore C. Rubin scored 13 points with a pair of rebounds. Hackett chipped in 11 points and six rebounds. Sher contributed seven points with six rebounds while Dortch scored six points and pulled down three boards.
