Football Loses to Southern Connecticut

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.-  The Pace Football team lost to the Southern Connecticut State University Owls 32-10 in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Setters fall to 0-3 and 0-2 in the NE-10, while the Owls improve to 1-2 and 1-1 in conference play.

On the Owls second possession of the game, Southern Connecticut drove down to the eight yard line but the Setters defense held back the Owls on a third-and-goal from the one. Southern Connecticut's Jeffrey Groth booted a 17-yard field goal for an early lead for the Owls. Early in the second quarter, the Owls' Jon Balcacer put extended the team to 10-0 with an 80-yard punt return for a touchdown.

The Setters got on the board late in the first half as freshman quarterback Brandon Tobin guided the Pace offense deep into Owls' territory. Tobin hit freshman wide receiver Alec Rappa for a key 42-yard connection to the Southern Connecticut 18-yard line and an Owls penalty moved the Setters inside the 10-yard line. Pace settled for a field goal with 1:07 left in the second quarter as sophomore Jake Armstrong was good from 25 yards out as the Owls led 10-3 at the break.

Southern Connecticut extended their lead late in the third quarter on a Groth 32-yard field goal. The Owls put up three touchdowns in the final quarter but the Setters answered late in the contest. Tobin led Pace on a nine-play, 59-yard drive as he hit Kyle Vadis for an 18-yard touchdown with 19 seconds on the clock.

For the Setters, Tobin completed 17-of-35 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown. Vadis finished with four receptions for 46 yards and a score, while Rappa posted three catches for 50 yards.
