PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- The Pace Football team fell in their Northeast-10 Conference opener to the Merrimack Warriors 75-2. The Setters fall to 0-2 and 0-1 in the NE-10, while the Warriors improve to 1-1 and 1-0 in conference play.
The Warriors took the lead early in the game as quarterback Joe Capobianco tossed for six touchdowns in the first half and Merrimack added a pair of scoring run by Armond McRae.
The Setters got their points at the 8:04 mark of the second quarter as freshman
Jah'Sheem Martin blocked a Merrimack extra point and
Joseph Roman scooped up the loose ball and return the ball 80 yards for the rare defensive two-point play.
For the Setters,
Valentino Miles rushed for 50 yards on 11 carries for Pace. On defense, Roman totaled five tackles, including one of Pace's six sacks on the day.
David Grant added five tackles, while
Niklas Heffran added four tackles and a pair of sacks. Martin (three tackles, sack sack),
Olatayo Ishola (one sack) and
Dan Pelish (one sack) rounded out the Setter defense.
Saturday was Military Appreciation Day and Pace Athletics recognized the country's military personnel. At halftime of the contest, 16 United States Veterans were honored for the service to the country.
The Setters are back in action next Saturday as they host Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up at Ann M. Dorner Middle School at 12 pm.
