Baseball Drops Extra Inning Contest Against Southern Connecticut

PLEASANTVILLE, NY – For the second time this week, the Pace University baseball team found themselves in an extra inning pitcher's duel, but Southern Connecticut pushed across a run in the top of the 10th inning as the Owls topped the Setters 3-2 in a Northeast-10 Conference contest.

Pace is now 12-23 overall for the season, 6-18 in conference and 5-11 in the Southwest Division. Southern Connecticut is 22-14-1 overall, 16-8 in the NE-10, and 11-5 in divisional play.

After SCSU tallied the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning on a homerun by Julian Sobin, the Setters rallied in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY/Eastport –South Manor) led off the inning with a double. Domenick Luongo (Darien, CT/Cardinal Spellman) (Darien, CT/Cardinal Spellman) followed with a double of his own to plate Gili and make it 1-1. After a sacrifice bunt by Jon Kovel (Schenectady, NY/Scotia Glenville) (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) moved Luongo to third, David Pepe (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) came through two batters later with a single, scoring Luongo and giving Pace a 2-1 lead.

The score would remain that way until the top of the eighth, With runners on second and third for the Owls, Joe Breen bounced a ball to third base. The Setters' third baseman came home with the ball, but hit T. K. Kiernan in the back with the throw, allowing Kiernan to score and tie the game at 2-2. Southern Connecticut would then push across the go-ahead run in the tenth to come away with the victory.

Tim Deegan (Levittown, NY/Kellenberg) turned in another strong effort for Pace, allowing one earned run in 7.1 innings of work. He was matched pitch for pitch on the other side by Rocco Cundari for the Owls who surrendered two runs in eight frames.

The two teams continue the series tomorrow at noon with a doubleheader. It is Senior Day for the Setters. Prior to the game, the eight seniors on the baseball team will be honored for their efforts during the past four years.
