PLESANTVILLE, NY- The Pace baseball program honored its eight graduating seniors prior to a doubleheader against the Southern Connecticut State Owls on Saturday afternoon. The Setters dropped two tough games to close out their 2014 season as they fell 2-0 in 11 innings and 7-1 in the nightcap.
The Setters finish their season at 12-25 overall and 5-13 in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division, while the Owls improve to 24-14-1 and 13-5 in division play.
In the opener, both starters turned in tremendous pitching efforts on the mound as Owls starter A.J. Turnier and Jonathan Chudy (Goshen, NY/Goshen) (Goshen, NY/Goshen) kept the game scoreless into extra innings. Turnier went 9 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and struck out nine, while Chudy went nine innings, allowing two hits and fanning five.
Both hurlers got no-decisions as the game was decided by the bullpens. Southern Connecticut pushed across a pair of runs in the 11th off reliever Dylan Mouzakes (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills). Owl reliever Pat Egan (3-3) tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out four. Mouzakes (1-4) tossed two innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
In the nightcap, James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) put up the first run of the game as he gave the Setters an early 1-0 lead with a fourth inning solo homerun to right field. The Owls took the lead in the fifth with a pair of runs and added a run in the sixth. Southern Connecticut capped their day with four runs in the ninth.
For Pace, Pjura went 2-for-4 with his homerun, while Tom Midolo (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) and John Kukura (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) also went 2-for-4 with Midolo hitting a double. Pace starter and senior Brian Sundberg (Westbury, NY/WT Clarke) tossed five innings, allowing two runs on four hits to fall to 1-4 on the season.
