NORTH EASTON, MA - The Pace University baseball team found themselves on both ends of a pitcher's duel at Stonehill as the Setters took game one 2-1 before falling by a 4-1 score in the nightcap in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader.
With the split, Pace is now 6-13 overall and holds a 2-8 record in the NE-10. The Skyhawks are 16-12 overall with a 6-5 conference mark.
The Setters scored all the runs they needed in game one in the first inning. With one out, Andrew Coffey (Greenwich, CT/Old Avon Farms) (Greenwich, CT/Old Avon Farms) singled. Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) came to the plate and laced a double sending Coffey to third. James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) followed suit with a double of his own, scoring Coffey to make it 1-0 Pace. Tom Midolo (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) came up next and grounded out to first, scoring Gili for a 2-0 advantage.
Meanwhile on the mound, Jonathan Silva (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) was superb. The senior lefthander scattered three hits and allowed just one run while striking out 10 in seven innings.
Stonehill made tightened the contest in the seventh when Christian Baglini singled home Chris Hoyt to slice the gap to 2-1. Silva (1-3) got out of the inning by striking out Dan Fratus and then handed the ball to Jonathan Chudy (Goshen, NY/Goshen) (Goshen, NY/Goshen) who tossed two scoreless innings to close the game and earn his first save of the season.
In game two, the Skyhawks scored a run in the second inning, but Pace countered in the top of the third as David Pepe (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) tripled to lead off the frame. Two batters later, Coffey singled him home, tying the game at 1-1. It would remain knotted until the sixth when Stonehill scored two and then added an eighth inning insurance run.
The Setters return to action on Wednesday, April 9 at 3:30 when they host New Haven in a Northeast-10 Southwest Division matchup.
