PLEASANTVILLE, NY– The Setters fell to the Southern New Hampshire Penmen 4-2 in game one and 10-6 in the nightcap in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. Pace falls to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the NE-10, while Southern New Hampshire improves to 13-4 and 2-0 in conference play.
In the opener, the Setters got on the board in the opening inning as David Pepe (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) gave Pace the early lead with an RBI single.
The Penmen rallied with a run in the third and fourth, while plating a pair of runs in the sixth. The Setters added a run in the seventh on a solo homerun by Tom Midolo (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian).
For the Setters, Jonathan Silva (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) got the start, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, while striking out two to fall to 0-3 on the season. Pepe and Gill both went 2-for-4 in the opener.
In the nightcap, the Penmen jumped out to a 9-0 lead with two runs in the second, four in the third and three in the fifth. The Setters got one back in the sixth as Danny Wynne (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Kukura got the Setters on the board with a run scoring single.
Southern New Hampshire got a run back in the seventh but the Setters rallied in the ninth with five runs. Jon Kovel (Schenectady, NY/Scotia Glenville) (Schenectady, NY/Scotia Glenville), John Kukura (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) and James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) all had RBI singles in the inning.
For the Setters, Ryan Mihalkovitz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) fell to 0-1 on the season as he went 4 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and struck out four. Kukura went 3-for-5 with two RBI in the nightcap.
The Setters return to action on Sunday, March 23 as they will host the Franklin Pierce Ravens for a twin bill at Finnerty Field at noon.
