Baseball Outlasts Dowling in 11 Innings

CARY, NC– James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) drove in a pair of runs in the 11th inning as the Setters outlasted the Dowling Golden Lions 4-2. Pace improves to 2-3 overall, while Dowling falls to 8-6 on the season.

Dowling got on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Setters rallied in the third with a pair of runs with two outs. David Pepe (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) walked and Michael Viegas (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) singled to put runners at first and second. Pjura reached on an error with two outs to load the bases. Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) put the Setters in the lead with a double to give Pace a 2-1 lead.

Dowling rallied in the eighth to tie the game at 2-2 to force extra innings.

After a scoreless tenth, the Setters broke through in the eleventh with a pair of runs despite the first two batters getting out. Pepe reached on an error and Viegas singled to put runners on first and third. Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) was hit by pitch to load up the bases with two outs. Pjura came through in the clutch, driving in Pepe and Viegas to put the Setters in the lead for good at 4-2.

On the mound, starter Jonathan Chudy (Goshen, NY/Goshen) (Goshen, NY/Goshen) went five innings, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out four. Tim Deegan (Levittown, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) (Levittown, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) tossed three innings, allowing one run on three hits, while Josh Garran (Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) picked up the win in relief, going three scoreless innings and struck out one.

The Setters continue their play at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, NC on Saturday, March 15 as they will take on Caldwell at 9:30 am and Felician at 1 pm.
