PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University Women's Basketball team earned an overtime victory over the visiting Queens Knights on Sunday. Freshman
Gabriella Rubin scored a game-best 18 points in the 64-61 win. The Setters now advance to 2-4, 1-2 NE-10 while Queens drops to 3-2, 0-0 ECC.
The Setters played strong defense early on, allowing just 13 points in the opening 12 minutes. After falling behind by nine points at the 7:03 mark, Rubin scored nine consecutive points for the Setters to tie the ballgame. Later in the first half, Pace fell down by four points but baskets by
Jaclyn Oskam and
Yuni Sher knotted things at 22-apiece with a minute remaining. After Queens added a three-pointer and a free throw, the Setters trailed 26-22 at half.
Rubin scored the opening points of the second half after sinking a pair of free throws that cut the Queens advantage to just two. Pace fell down seven points with just 5:16 remaining, but consecutive baskets by
Margo Hackett and
Kirsten Dodge helped chip away at the lead. The Hackett bucket began 13-4 run for Pace that was capped off by a pair of free throws to give the Setters their first lead of the half. Queens responded with a jumper to tie things at 52-all with 28 seconds remaining, but Rubin splashed a shot from distance to put Pace back on top. The Setters held a two-point advantage with five seconds remaining before a Queens buzzer beater forced the game to overtime.
Pace struck first in the extra session after
Rachel Dortch converted on a jumper in the opening minute. The Knights split a pair of free throws at the charity stripe before Dodge converted on a layup that gave the Setters a three point lead. Queens cut the Pace advantage to just one with 2:08 remaining, but Dodge hit a jumper that increased the lead to 64-61, the eventual final score of the contest. The Setters never trailed throughout the overtime session.
Rubin added a team-high six assists and five rebounds to her 18 points. Dodge contributed 14 points and nine boards while Sher chipped in six points and pulled down a team-high ten rebounds. Oskam scored eight points on 3-6 shooting and Hackett pitched in seven points thanks to 4-5 shooting from the stripe.
Pace returns to action this Wednesday when they travel to Garden City, N.Y. to take on Adelphi. Tipoff for the Northeast-10 Conference matchup is slated for 5:30 p.m.
