PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The Pace University women's basketball team held the Saint Anselm Hawks to just 36.0% shooting for the game, but the Hawks were able to outshoot the Setters from the free throw line as Pace fell to Saint Anselm 61-52 in a Northeast-10 Conference contest.
The Setters (3-13, 2-8 NE-10) were led by juniors Shanice Maynard (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson / Coppin State) (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) and Margo Hackett (Pawling, NY/Pawling) (Pawling, NY/Pawling) who had 14 points each. Fellow junior Jeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) notched a career high with 11 points on the strength of a trio of three-pointers. Sophomore forward Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) recorded her fourth straight game with double-figures in rebounding, finishing with 11.
Pace jumped out early on the strength of hitting five of their first seven shots, en route to taking a 19-12 lead 8:31 into the contest. The Hawks (10-7, 6-6 NE-10) battled back, but the Setters never relinquished the lead taking a 33-30 advantage into halftime.
Unfortunately, Saint Anselm started the second half hot, scoring 13 points in the first six minutes to take a 43-33 lead. Trailing 45-35 with 11:24 remaining, Pace made a run. A three by Drury followed by a defensive stop and two free throws from Maynard cut the lead to 45-40 at the 10:35 mark. The Hawks would once again establish a 10-point lead before the Setters hit back-to-back threes by Drury and Hackett to make it 52-48 with 5:26 remaining. The comeback would fall shy, however as Saint Anselm pulled away at the line.
Pace next hosts NE-10 rival Franklin Pierce. The game is set for Wednesday, January 22 at 5:30 pm.
