EASTON, MA- Kai Smith (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) led the Setters with 18 points but Pace fell to the Skyhawks of Stonehill College 79-68 in Northeast-10 Conference action.
The Skyhawks (4-9, 2-7 NE-10) jumped out to a 20-11 lead at the 12:32 mark of the second half. Pace rallied, slowly slicing the score down to two points at 26-24 but the Skyhawks rallied to push it to five points.
Pace (3-11, 1-7 NE-10) rallied in the final four minutes of the half as Smith book-ended the runs with triples as the Setters flipped the score to push ahead to a 37-33 lead with 18 seconds left. Stonehill netted a basket in the waning seconds but Pace held a 37-35 lead at the break.
Stonehill opened the second half with a 15-5 run to retake the lead at 50-42 with 13:44 left in the game. The Skyhawks added to their lead as they built an 11 points lead at the 8:08 mark. The Setters answered with a 9-0 burst as Jamaal James (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn College Academy) (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn College Academy) opened the run with a basket, while Jonathan Merceus (Union, NJ/Union) (Union, NJ/Union) added a pair of free throws. Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) capped the run with a pair of free throws and a trifecta to cut the Stonehill lead to 60-58 with 5:42 remaining in the game.
The Skyhawks pushed their lead back to 11 points and held on in the final minute as they went 7-for-8 at the line in the final minute of play.
For the Setters, Smith went 4-for-4 from downtown, finishing with 18 points and six rebounds. Primus-Devonish tallied 10 points, five steals and three rebounds, while Merceus added 15 points and four caroms. James posted 14 points and six rebounds.
The Setters continue their road trip as they travel to Manchester, NH on Tuesday, January 14 for the NE-10 match-up against Southern New Hampshire University at 7:30 pm.
