PHILIPPI, WV- Freshman running back Delaney Wallace (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) scored a pair of touchdowns as the Setters come up short to Alderson Broaddus University 31-28 in both teams' 2013 season opener. The Setters fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Battlers open at 1-0.
The first half saw back and forth scoring by teams as the Battlers got on the board first with a 37-yard touchdown run midway through the opening quarter. Wallace evened the score later in the quarter as he scampered into the end zone from 14 yard out for his first collegiate touchdown.
Alderson Broaddus answered on the first play of the second quarter to jump back ahead at 14-7. The Setters answered as quarterback Brian Beeker (Spring Hill, FL/Springstead) (Spring Hill, FL/Springstead) led the Pace offense down the field on a 6-play, 69-yard drive capped off by an end around 21-yard run for Sherrod Ford-Cherry (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) to tie the game at 14. The Battled added a late field goal as they took a 17-14 lead into the break.
The Setters defense forced a fumble on the Battlers' opening possession and the Pace offense capitalized. Beeker again led the Setters on a scoring drive and connected with Wallace on a five-yard scoring strike to give Pace their first lead of the game at 21-17. Alderson Broaddus rallied late in the quarter for a touchdown to retake the lead at 24-21.
The Battlers added another score early in the fourth to extend out to a 31-21 advantage. Pace rallied late in the game as Beeker tossed his second score of the day, hitting Cameron Davis (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL/Providence) (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL/Providence) on a 53-yard touchdown connection to slice the score down to three points at 31-28. The Setters failed to come up with the game tying points as they fell in their opener.
For the Setters, Wallace finished with 18 carries for 96 yards on the ground, while catching three passes for 14 yards. Beeker went 19-for-32 in the air for 225 yards and two touchdowns, while Kyle Johnson (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) caught six passes for 84 yards. Davis finished with four receptions for 91 yards. On defense, Jimmy Myers (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) led the Setters with nine tackles, while Joe Camilleri (Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) (Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) tallied seven tackles along with a forced and recovered fumble. Tyler Owens (Salem, NJ/Salem) tallied two sacks on the day.
The Setters return to action next Saturday, September 14 as they will open up their Northeast-10 Conference schedule on the road at the University of New Haven for a 1 pm kick-off.
