Baseball Sweeps Le Moyne; Retain First Place in Division

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- Brandon Martineson (Prospect, KY/Warwick (NY)) (Prospect, KY/Warwick) drove in three games in the nightcap as the Setters swept a twin bill from the Dolphins of Le Moyne College in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action. The Setters took the opener 11-4 and completed the sweep with a 4-3 win in the nightcap to retain a one-game lead in the division. Pace, ranked #3 in this week's NCAA East Region poll, improves to 28-12 overall and 12-4 in the Southwest Division, while the Dolphins fall to 18-22 and 9-7 in division play.

In the opener, Le Moyne jumped out to an early lead with one run in the opening inning. The Setters rallied in the fourth with three runs as Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Pace pulled ahead behind RBI singles by Joe Solomeno (Holbrook , NY/Sachem East) (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) and Jon Kovel (Schenectady, NY/Scotia Glenville) (Schenectady, NY/Scotia Glenville). The Dolphins rallied in the fifth inning with a pair of runs to tie the score at 3-3.

Pace pulled ahead in the sixth as while Charlie Galasso (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) drove in a pair of runs with a single for a 5-3 lead. The Dolphins added one in the seventh but the Setters broke the game open with six runs in the seventh. Pace capitalized on four Dolphin errors in the inning, while Michael Viegas (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) had a key two-run single in the inning for the Setters.

For Pace, Galasso and Martineson both went 3-for-4 in the game with both scoring two runs. On the hill, Neil Pezzullo (Harwich, MA/Harwich) started, going six innings, allowing four runs on four hits, while striking out seven to improve to 5-3 on the season. Josh Grant (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) tossed three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and struck out one to earn his first save of the season.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins again struck first as they scored in the opening inning. The Setters rallied to take a 3-1 lead with a run in the first and two more in the third. Martineson accounted for all three runs as he singled in Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) in the first and third as Bobby Horn (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford, CT/Westhill) scored in the third. Le Moyne chipped away to tie the game with a run in the sixth and seventh.

Pace scored the eventual game-winning run in the seventh as Viegas led off with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Viegas advanced to third on a groundout and scored following a wild pitch.

For the Setters, Martineson went 2-for-4 with three RBI's, while Gili scored twice in game two. On the hill, Ryan Mihalkovitz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) started, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, while striking out one. Dylan Mouzakes (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) went 2/3 of an inning, allowing one run on two hits. Nick Sammartano (Huntington Station, NY/Huntington) (Huntington Station, NY/Huntington) picked up the win in relief as he went 2/3 of an inning to improve to 1-0 on the season. Eddie Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) closed out the game with two scoreless innings, striking out two for his fifth save of the season.

The Setters and the Dolphins conclude the series on Sunday, April 28 with a single game starting at 1 pm at Finnerty Field. Prior to the game, Pace Baseball will honor its seven seniors for their careers with the Setters.
