Pace Falls to Chargers in Late Game Rally

Pleasantville, N.Y.- The Setters gave up a 6-0 lead late in the game for an unfortunate divisional loss against the Chargers of New Haven University, 7-6.  The Setters stand at 26-12 overall, 15-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference and still hold first place in the Southwest Division while the Chargers advance to 21-12 overall and 9-5 in the conference.

Jonathan Chudy (Goshen, NY/Goshen) (Goshen, NY / Goshen) struck out 10 batters through 6 1/3 innings.  Josh Garran (Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) (Old Tappan, NJ / Northern Valley Regional) and Eddie Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) (Yonkers, NY / Archbishop Stepinac) split an innings worth of time on the mound before Josh Grant (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) (Corning, NY / Corning Painted Post West) came in for the final two innings and struck out two.

James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT / Shelton) and Charlie Galasso (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (West Harrison, NY / Harrison) each tallied two RBI's while Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY / Eastport-South Manor) went 2-for-5 and scored three runs.

Chris DeMorais at DH and TJ Riccio both contributed two RBI's to the Chargers win. Frank Vilacha received the win for the Chargers on an inning pitched while Peter Jay came in for the final two innings and his 11th save of the year.  John Melville got the start and withstood five innings, while Brian Caselli also saw an inning on the mound.

Pace wasted no time as they scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first as Gili and Michael Viegas (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, NY / Monsignor Farrell) singled and Galasso reached on an error to bring Gili home. Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) hit a single up the middle to bring Viegas home and go up 2-0 on the Chargers.

The Setters saw two runs on three hits again in the second with a double from Bobby Horn (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford, CT / Westhill) to start it off. Gili singled and advanced Horn to third base and then stole second to put both Setters in scoring position.  Galasso grounded out but tallied an RBI as Horn tagged up to cross home before Pjura managed to hit a double to bring Gili home as well to go up 4-0.

Pjura walked in the bottom of the fifth, advanced on a wild pitch and then scored the fifth run as Brandon Martineson doubled down the left line.

Gili was able to reach on an error to start the sixth and then advanced to second on a perfectly executed bunt by Viegas.  Both players advanced as Galasso grounded out before Pjura came up for a sacrifice fly to score Gili to go up 6-0.

The Chargers rallied in the sixth inning to make a comeback as they scored a five-run inning as they scored four runs on single base hits and the fifth on a hit-by-pitch.

The lead was stolen from them in the top of the eighth as a single and an error put two Chargers on base. Nick Nunziato then singled to left to score an RBI on the tying run. The next batter was then hit by a pitch before Riccio came up with a sac fly for the eventual winning run.

The Setters will host their final home regular season game, along with senior day this weekend for a three-game series against the Dolphins of Le Moyne College.  It will start with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 pm and 2 pm, followed by a single game on Sunday at 1 pm.
