Baseball Splits Assumption; Retain Slim Edge in Division Lead

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Setters split a doubleheader with the Greyhounds of Assumption College to retain a slim edge in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division. The Greyhounds took the opener 6-4, while the Setters rolled to a 17-2 win the nightcap. Pace holds onto first place in the division as they move to 26-11 overall and 10-3 in the Southwest, while the Greyhounds stand at 13-23 overall and 8-4 in division play.

In the opener, James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) put the Setters in the lead with an RBI single. Assumption rallied with two runs in their half of the inning and three more in the second. Jon Kovel (Schenectady, NY/Scotia Glenville) (Schenectady, NY/Scotia Glenville) drove had a two run homerun in the fifth, while Bobby Horn (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford, CT/Westhill) drove in another run in the seventh as the Setters pulled to within a run at 5-4. The Greyhounds added a run in the eighth and held Pace off the board to take game on 6-4.

For Pace, Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) and Pjura both had two hits. On the mound, Michael Tamburino (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) got the start, going 7 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits and struck out two to fall to 2-2 on the season.

In the nightcap, the Setters rapped out 21 hits en-route to a 17-2 victory. Joe Solomeno (Holbrook , NY/Sachem East) (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) drove in the first run of the game in the second inning. Pace went on to add two runs in the third on a Wukitsch double and five more in the fourth. Horn singled in two runs in the fourth, while Brandon Martineson (Prospect, KY/Warwick (NY)) (Prospect, KY/Warwick) blasted a three-run homerun for an 8-0 Pace lead. The Setters added nine runs in the final three inning, including a two-run homerun by Pjura.

In game two, Martineson went 3-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI's, while Gili scored twice and Pjura scored three times. On the mound, Dylan Mouzakes (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) started, going six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and struck out five to improve to a perfect 5-0 on the seaso. Neil Pezzullo (Harwich, MA/Harwich) (Harwich, MA/Harwich) tossed two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and struck out three. Mike Jeannetti (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) recorded the final three outs, allowing two runs on four hits and struck out one

The Setters are back in action on Wednesday, April 24 for NE-10 Southwest Division action as they host New Haven at Finnerty Field for a 3:30 pm start time.
