POMONA, N.Y.- The Setters extended their winning streak to a season-high nine games as they defeated the Chargers of Dominican College in non-conference action. Pace improved to 25-9 overall while the Chargers drop to 19-13 on the season.
Dominican got on the board first with four runs in the opening inning. The Setters answered with four runs in the top of the second as they pulled even at 4-4. Pace loaded the bases in the inning with the first run scoring as Bobby Horn (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford, CT/Westhill) was hit by a pitch. Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) drove in a run with a single, while Charlie Galasso (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) tied the game at four with a two-run single.
The Chargers took back the lead with a run in the bottom of the second with one run to go back in front 5-4. The Setters again battled back to tie the score at five in the third as David Pepe (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) doubled to lead off the inning. Pepe came around to score on the next batter as he scored on a fly-out and error by the center fielder. Pace added a pair of runs in the fourth as Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) doubled in the go-ahead run, while Tom Midolo (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) singled in another run to put the Setters up 7-5.
The Setters added some insurance runs in the later innings as Brandon Martineson (Prospect, KY/Warwick (NY)) (Prospect, KY/Warwick) had an RBI double in the sixth inning as Pace added three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Galasso drove in a run with a single, while Martineson drove in a pair of runs with a double in the seventh. Michael Viegas (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) added a run in the eighth with a single, while Galasso drove in his fourth run of the game with a single.
On the mound, Ryan Mihalkovitz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) started, going four innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and struck out two. Josh Grant (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) earned the win in relief to improve to 2-0 as he tossed four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and struck out three. Robert Perez (Bronx, NY/Trinity Pawling) came on in the final inning, allowing one hit and struck out one.
The Setters will head to Assumption College for a three-game series this weekend. Pace will take on the Greyhounds on Friday, April 19 with a single game starting at 3:30 pm and conclude the series on Sunday, April 21 with a doubleheader starting at 12 pm.
