PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- Ryan Mihalkovitz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) tossed six scoreless innings as the Setters blanked the Cougars of Caldwell College 3-0 in non-conference action. The Setters reach the 20-win plateau for a second consecutive season as they improve to 20-9 overall, while the Cougars fall to 7-19 on the season.
The pitchers dominated the first half of the game for both teams as the Setters had three hits in the first five innings, while Caldwell registered a pair of hits. Pace got the offense going in the sixth as David Pepe (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) led off with a single and Charlie Galasso (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) doubled. Following an intentional walk to Brandon Martineson (Prospect, KY/Warwick (NY)) (Prospect, KY/Warwick) and a fielder's choice force-out at the plate, Tom Midolo (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) put the Setters in the lead with a sacrifice fly to score Galasso. Bobby Horn (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford, CT/Westhill) drove in a second run with an infield single for a 2-0 Pace lead. The Setters added an insurance run in the seventh on a Galasso sacrifice fly as the Pace used three pitchers to combine for the shutout.
Mihalkovitz (1-0) earned his first collegiate win as he tossed six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and struck out four. Josh Grant (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and struck out one. Nick Sammartano (Huntington Station, NY/Huntington) picked up his first save of the season as he retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to lock up Pace's 20th win of the season.
The Setters are back in action as they host the Yellow Jackets of American International College for a three-game series this weekend in Northeast-10 Southwest Division play. The teams play a twin bill on Saturday, April 13 starting at 12 pm at Finnerty Field and wrap up the series on Sunday, April 14 with one game starting at 1 pm at Finnerty Field.
