WEST HAVEN, Conn.- The Setters rallied in extra innings to down the Chargers of the University of New Haven 8-6 in 10 innings in Northeast-10 Southwest Division play. Pace improves 19-9 overall and take over first place in the Southwest Division with a 5-1 record. The Chargers fall to 16-8 overall and 4-2 in division play.
The Setters got on the board early as they scored three runs in the opening innings. Brandon Martineson (Prospect, KY/Warwick (NY)) (Prospect, KY/Warwick) drove in a run with a fielder's choice with a second run scoring on the play on a New Haven error. Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) singled in another run to put Pace up 3-0. The Chargers added a run in the third innings but the Setters answered with another three-spot in the fourth. Bobby Horn (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford, CT/Westhill) had an RBI single, while Michael Viegas (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) drove in pair of runs with a double.
New Haven rallied in the fourth with two runs and scored a pair of runs with two outs in the ninth to force extra innings. The Setters capitalized in the tenth inning as they scored the go-ahead run on a Charger error, while Wukitsch drove in his second run of the game with a single for an 8-6 lead.
For the Setters, Wukitsch and Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) both went 3-for-5 with Gili scoring two runs in the game. Robert Rizzitelli (Monroe, CT/Masuk) (Monroe, CT/Masuk) started, going six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out seven. Tim Deegan (Levittown, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) (Levittown, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and struck out four. Eddie Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) got the win in relief (3-1) as he tossed one inning, allowing two hits and struck out two, while Neil Pezzullo (Harwich, MA/Harwich) struck out the lone batter he faced to earn his first save of the season.
The Setters return home on Thursday, April 11 for a non-conference game against Caldwell College at 3:30 pm at Finnerty Field.
