Scioscia Nets Five Points as Lacrosse Falls to Southern New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H.- William Scioscia (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) netted five points as the Setters fell to the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire 14-12 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Setters fall to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the NE-10, while the Penmen improve to 2-4 and 2-0 in conference play.

The Penmen jumped out to an early lead as they score three goals in the opening quarter. Matt Gebhardt (West Islip, NY/West Islip) (West Islip, NY/West Islip) scored the lone Pace goal on the quarter off a Matt Mirabito (Binghamton, NY/Broome CC) (Binghamton, NY/Broome CC) assist.

Southern New Hampshire extended out to a 4-1 lead with a goal early in the second quarter but the Setters rallied with three of the next four goals to close to within a goal at 5-4. Scioscia, Thomas Earl (North Babylon, NY/St. Anthony's) (North Babylon, NY/St. Anthony's) rallied the Setters, while Matthew Cossidente (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) capitalized on the man-up situation to pull Pace to within a goal with 5:29 left in the second quarter.

The Penmen rallied in the final five minutes with a pair of goals but the Setters built momentum late in the half as Earl scored with 35 seconds left to pull Pace to within a two goal deficit at halftime.

The Setters continued their positive streak into the second half as they scored four straight goals to start the second half to pull ahead 9-7. Scioscia scored twice as did Earl with one of his tallies coming on the power play.

Southern New Hampshire netted a late goal in the third quarter as rallied with two goals to start the fourth quarter as they retook a one goal advantage. Scioscia pulled the Setters even with his fourth goal of the afternoon to knot the score at 10-10 with 11:29 left in the game. The Penmen netted three unanswered to take a 13-10 lead with 2:14 left in the contest. Gebhardt pulled the Setters to within two goals 50 seconds later but the Penmen netted a man-up score and held on in the final minute of play.

For the Setters, Scioscia led the Setters with five points on four goals and one assist, while Earl tallied four goals. Gebhardt finished with two goals and two assists in the game. In net, Timothy Izzo (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph / Franklin Pierce) (Trumbull, CT/St. Joseph/Franklin Pierce) played the first half and recorded seven saves, while Conor Brophy (Pompton Lakes, NJ/DePaul Catholic) came on to play in the second half, recording four saves as his record falls to 0-1 on the season.

The Setters return to action on Tuesday, March 26 as they will travel to Garden City, NY for an NE-10 game against Adelphi at 4 pm.
