Women's Basketball Comes Up Short in Overtime Loss to Panthers, 65-57

Pleasantville, N.Y.-The Setters fell to the Panthers of Adelphi University in overtime of conference action on Wednesday, 65-57.  The Setters fall to 13-11 overall and 11-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference while the Panthers advance to 13-11 overall and 10-10 in the conference.

Brittany Shields (Cold Spring, NY / Haldane) led the Setters with a double-double in 18 points on 7-12 shooting, 12 rebounds and added three assists.  Jessica Scannell (Cork, Ireland/St. Vincents) (Cork, Ireland / St. Vincent's) tallied 15 points, five assists, five steals and three rebounds while Margo Hackett (Pawling, NY/Pawling) (Pawling, NY / Pawling) finished with 11 points and three rebounds. 

Jessica Kitrys led the Panthers with 30 points and 14 rebounds.  Sade Jackson bulked up the box score with seven points, seven assists, six rebounds four steals and three blocks.  Tara Flynn contributed 12 points. 

The two teams shot similarly throughout the game as Pace finished shooting 39.3% from the field, 29.4% from three-point range and 100% from the free-throw line while the Panthers shot 40.7% from the field, 28.6% from the outside and 73.3% from the line.  Both teams also had 28 points scored in the paint but the Panthers out-shot the Setters 21-14 off of turnovers and 25-0 from the bench. 

Adelphi took a lead early into overtime and took their largest lead of the game, by eight,  as the Setters were over the foul limit and sent the Panthers to the line three times in the final minute of overtime.  The Panthers converted five of those six shots to solidify the win, 65-57. 

The Setters came out hot the second half taking their largest lead of the game within the first four minutes, 34-23.  The Panthers slowly worked at minimizing the point differential and were able to come within one point halfway through the second half.  The Panthers took their first lead of the game with 8:31 to go in regulation but the Setters would see the lead again on a jumper from Allison Cleary (New Windsor, NY / Cornwall Central) at 7:33. The Panthers would take that lead back but the teams would see four tie scores to end regulation and go into overtime, 55-55. 

The first half was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams but the Setters were able to hold a slight advantage, by four points or less, throughout most of the half.  The Setters took their largest lead on a triple from Scannell with 4:08 to go in the half, 22-16.  The Panthers showed effort to make a comeback but Shields converted on a layup with 00:09 which allowed the Setters to go into halftime ahead 26-21.

The Setters will host the Greyhounds of Assumption College for senior day on Saturday, February 23 for a 1:30 pm conference match-up.
