PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The Pace University women's basketball team placed four players in double figures and Head Coach Carrie Seymour picked up her 400th career victory as the Setters topped the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans 67-45 on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Coach Seymour earned career win #400 which ranks her 22nd among the active winningest women's basketball coaches in Division II. In addition, she is in the top-50 all-time in wins in Division II history.
Junior guard Shanice Maynard (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson / Coppin State) (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow junior Margo Hackett (Pawling, NY/Pawling) (Pawling, NY/Pawling) scored 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Sophomore forward Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) and freshman center Kirsten Dodge (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey) scored 10 points each with Dodge grabbing a career-high nine boards.
Pace opened strong and took the lead for good just more than six-and-a-half minutes into the first half on a triple from Hackett to make it 12-9 Setters at the 13:24 mark. The Setters extended their lead as the half progressed, thanks to a strong defensive effort that saw the Spartans shoot just 7-for-32 from the field in the opening frame. Pace opened up their largest lead of the stanza on a jumper by Sher with 29 seconds remaining to extend the advantage to 29-17 before taking a 29-20 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Setters continued to front-run, pushing the lead out to 15 on a jumper by Sher with 12:47 remaining, making it 43-28. St. Thomas Aquinas would make a run, scoring 12 of the next 14 points during a 4:54 span to cut the lead to 45-40 with 7:53 remaining. After the two teams played evenly in the next minute-and-a-half, Pace pulled away down the stretch. The Setters ended the game on a 17-0 run, keyed by eight points from Maynard, who started the run with back-to-back jumpers.
Pace is in action next on Saturday, December 21 when they close out the 2013 portion of their schedule with a date against the Felician Golden Falcons. The game is set for a 1:00 pm tipoff in Lodi, NJ.
