Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Knights

PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The Pace women's basketball team erased a double-digit halftime deficit to tie the Queens Knights, but the Knights pulled away at the line in the waning moments as Pace fell 70-61 in a non-conference contest.

Junior guard Margo Hackett (Pawling, NY/Pawling) (Pawling, NY/Pawling) led all scorers with 20 points, 15 of them in the second half. Freshman Loren Kaiser (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) scored 15 points in her college debut while junior Shanice Maynard (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson / Coppin State) (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) tallied 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.  Sophomore forward Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) led the Setters with 10 rebounds while contributing eight points.

Pace (0-1) trailed 50-38 following a layup by Kristen Korzevinski at the 12:39 mark of the second half. The Setters hit a trio of three pointers on successive trips down the floor as two Hackett treys  bookended a triple from Kaiser to cut the Knights lead to 50-47. After a defensive stop, Kaiser was fouled and hit 1-of-2 at the line. Off a missed layup, Sher grabbed the rebound and moved the ball up the floor to junior guard Jeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) who sent a pass through the lane to a cutting Kaiser. The freshman then layed the ball in for a 50-50 tie with 10:07 remaining.

During the next eight minutes, neither team held more than a four point lead. In the final two minutes, Queens pulled away, hitting five free throws.

For the game, Pace shot 9-for-18 from beyond the arc as part of a 37.3% effort from the floor overall. The Setters were hurt, however, by an 8-for-20 performance at the line.

Pace is in action next on Tuesday, November 12 for a non-conference contest against Assumption at 7:00 pm. The Knights next take to the court against American International on Saturday, November 16 at 1:30 pm.
