Box Score PLEASANTVILLE, NY- Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) netted 26 points as the men's basketball team came up short to the Chargers of the University of New Haven 73-62 in Northeast-10 Conference action.
The Setters fall to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in the NE-10, while the Chargers improve to 1-3 and 1-1 in conference play.
Primus-Devonish scored six of Pace's first 10 points as the Setters took a 10-7 lead at the 15:07 mark. The Chargers answered to take a 15-14 lead five minutes later but Primus-Devonish pulled the Setters even at 17 with 8:52 left in the half. New Haven retook the lead and pushed it to as much as 21 points with just over a minute to play. Primus-Devonish tallied five points in the last minute, including a buzzer beating trifecta, as the Setters trailed 45-29 at the break.
The Chargers maintained a double-digit throughout the first part of the second half before the Setters turned up the defense. New Haven led 61-46 with 7:57 left in the game but the Setters rallied behind a 14-3 runs over the next five and a half minutes. Nick Jackson (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) connected on a triple and a lay-up while Jonathan Merceus (Union, NJ/Union) (Union, NJ/Union) scored six points in the run, including the final two points, that pulled the Setters to within four points at 64-60 with 2:24 left in the game. The Chargers held off the Setters as a lay-up and a triple pushed it back to nine points and New Haven went 4-for-4 at the line in the final minute to secure the win.
For the Setters, Primus-Devonish led the way with 26 points along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Merceus finished with 14 points and four rebounds, while Jackson totaled eight points off the bench. Kai Smith (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) chipped in seven points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Pace hosts the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, November 26 at 7:30 pm in an NE-10 clash.
