Setters Rally With Five Runs in the Eighth to Soar Past Owls 6-3

Pace Will Host New Haven in the First Round of NE-10 Playoffs on Tuesday at Finnerty Field

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- The Pace University baseball team, ranked #8 in this week's NCAA Division II East Region poll, wrapped up the regular season on a positive note as they rallied with five runs in the eighth inning to soar past the Owls of Southern Connecticut State by a score of 6-3 in Northeast-10 Southwest action. Pace improves to 29-18 overall and finish 19-10 in the NE-10 and 17-4 in the Southwest. The Owls end their regular season at 31-16 overall, 18-11 and 13-8 in division play.

The Setters took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning as Tyler Collins (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic) (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic)was hit by a pitch and eventually came around to score on a single by Kyle Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford) (Waterford, CT/Waterford). The Owls rallied in the seventh as they scored all three of their runs in the inning.

Pace answered in the eighth and decisive inning where they rallied with five runs. The Setters loaded the bases with no outs. After one out, Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) drew a walk to force in the first Pace run as they cut the score to 3-2. Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) tied the game at three with a sacrifice fly to deep right field. Collins broke the tie with an RBI single as the Setters jumped into the lead at 4-3. James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) drove in a second run with a single and an error by the right fielder on the play allowed Collins to score with the sixth Pace run in the game.

Jonathan Chudy (Goshen, NY/Goshen) (Goshen. NY/Goshen) got the start as tossed five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and struck out three. Jonathan Silva (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) pitched 1+ innings, allowing one run on one hit and struck out one. Robert Perez (Bronx, NY/Trinity Pawling) came on for the final three innings, allowing two runs on two hits and struck out two to even his record at 1-1 on the season.

Pace has won the NE-10 Southwest Division Title and enter the NE-10 Tournament as the #1 seed in division play. The Setters will host the First Round of the NE-10 Playoffs on Tuesday, May 8 at Finnerty Field against the University of New Haven at 2 pm.
