MANCHESTER, N.H.- The Setters split a doubleheader against the Hawks of Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference action. Pace took the opener 6-5, while the Hawks won the second game 9-5. The Setters moved to 28-18 overall and 15-13 in the NE-10, while the Hawks are now 18-26 and 12-16 in conference play.
In the opener, the Setters built a 6-0 lead over the first six innings as Hana Wright (Hillsboro, OR/Valley Catholic) (Hillsboro, OR/Valley Catholic) got the Setters off to a 2-0 lead with a two-run homerun in the first inning. Pace added two runs in the third as Natalie Gellos (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) had an RBI single, while Jeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic High School) (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) singled and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
The Setters added a run in the sixth as Lana Buchbinder (San Francisco, CA/George Washington) (San Francisco, CA/George Washington) singled and came around to score on an error. The Hawks rallied in the final inning as they scored five runs but Kayla Hill (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison High School) (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) came on to get the final out to pick up her second save of the season. Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) improved to 11-4 as she tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, while striking out two.
In the nightcap, Saint Anselm jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings of play. Sabrina Gonzalez (Oxnard, CA/Ventura College) (Oxnard, CA/Ventura College) cut the lead in half as she doubled in two runs in the third inning. The Hawks added a run in the fifth but Pace answered with a pair of runs in the fifth. Gellos walked, while Wright blasted her second homerun of the day to pull the Setters to with a run at 5-4. Saint Anselm rallied with four runs in the sixth for a 9-4 lead as the Setters got a run in the seventh but came up short of a comeback.
Chelsea Shea (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) fell to 6-6 on the season as she went two innings, allowing four runs on five hits, while striking out one. Hill came on in relief for the final four innings, as she allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits, while striking out two.
The Setters return to action on Saturday, April 21 when they will travel to Southern New Hampshire for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at 11 am.
