SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Setters completed a weekend sweep over the Yellow Jackets of American International College with a 6-5 victory in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action. Pace improves to 20-14 overall, 10-7 in the NE-10 and 8-1 in the NE-10 Southwest, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 11-18-1, 4-12-1 and 1-7-1 in division play.
American International took an early 1-0 with a run in the opening inning. Pace took the lead in the second as they rallied with two outs. Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick) (Warwick, NY/Warwick) and Joe Solomeno (Holbrook , NY/Sachem East) (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) singled and eventually scored on a two-run double by Chris Gili (Waccabuc, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Waccabuc, NY/Eastport-South Manor).
Pace added four in the sixth inning as Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) led off with a solo homerun. The Setters loaded the bases and scored three runs on a fielding error by the right fielder to put Pace up 6-1. The Yellow Jackets rallied in the later innings as they scored three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth but fell short of a comeback as Pace completed the weekend sweep.
For Pace, Solomeno went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Gili was 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Brian Sundberg (Westbury, NY/WT Clarke) (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) tossed 7 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits, while striking out four to improve to 4-3 on the season. Eddie Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepanic) came on for the final 1 1/3 innings as he struck out one.
The Setters return to action on Tuesday, April 17 when they will host Adelphi University in a NE-10 Southwest Division game starting at 3:30 pm.
