Tamburino K's 13 in Game One Victory
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Setters produced a pair of solid pitching efforts as Pace swept American International College 9-1 and 11-4 in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action. Pace improves to 19-14 overall, 9-7 in the NE-10 and 7-1 in the Southwest, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 11-17-1, 4-11-1 and 1-6-1 in division play.
The Setters dominated in the opener as Michael Tamburino (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) tossed a complete game four hitter as he struck 13 in the 9-1 victory. Kyle Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford) (Waterford, CT/Waterford) went 2-for-4 with two RBI's, while Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) went 3-for-6 with two RBI's. Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) collected two hits and drove in two and scored twice for the Setters.
In the nightcap, American International scored twice in the opening inning, while Pace added a run in the third as the Yellow Jackets led 2-1. The Setters rallied in the in later innings as they scored four in the sixth and added three in the seventh.
In the sixth, James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) drove in the tying run with a single. Chris Gili (Waccabuc, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Waccabuc, NY/Eastport-South Manor) had a key hit in the inning with a two-run double to give Pace the lead, while Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) drove in another run with a base hit for a 5-2 Setter lead. Pjura came through for the Setters again in the seventh as he drove in two runs with a double and later scored on a balk for an 8-3 Pace advantage. The Setter added three runs in the ninth as Gili and Chaputian both scored on a wild pitches, while Turnier had an RBI single.
For Pace, Pjura went 3-for-5 in the second game with three RBI's and two runs scored, while Gili was 4-for-4 with two RBI's and scored two runs. Starter Neil Pezzullo (Harwich, MA/Harwich) (Harwich, MA/Harwich) remained unbeaten on the season at 5-0 as he tossed eight innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out four. Eddie Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepanic) came on for the final inning as he allowed a run on one hit.
The Setters and the Yellow Jackets wrap up their three game series on Sunday, April 15 at American International for one game at 1 pm.
