PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick) (Warwick, NY/Warwick) blasted a pair of homeruns and drove in five runs as the Setters rolled past Queens 14-8 in non-conference action. The Setters improve to 17-14 overall, while the Knights fall to 7-17 on the season.
Martineson got the Setter offense off to a strong start as he blasted a three-run homerun in the opening inning and followed it up with a solo homerun in the third to stake Pace to a 4-1 lead. The teams traded runs in the fourth inning but the Knights crossed the plate four times in the fifth inning as they pulled ahead by a run at 6-5.
The Setters broke the game open in the sixth as they scored eight runs as they jumped out to a 13-6 lead. Michael Liguori (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) tied the game with an RBI double, while Martineson drew a bases loaded walk to put the Setters in front 7-6. James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) and Alexander Rough (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford, CT/Westhill) both had two-run singles as Pace built a commanding lead. Pjura added an RBI single in the seventh to the final Pace run of the day.
Martineson finished the day, going 2-for-3 with five RBI's, while Pjura was 3-for-5 with three RBI's. On the hill, Tom McIntosh (Stamford, CT/Stamford) (Stamford, CT/Stamford) got the start, as he tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits, while striking out three. Jonathan Chudy (Goshen, NY/Goshen) (Goshen, NY/Goshen) tossed a 1/3 of an inning, allowing two hits and one unearned run. Chris Gili (Waccabuc, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Waccabuc, NY/Eastport-South Manor) tossed three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and struck out four to pick up his first win of the season. Robert Perez (Bronx, NY/Trinity Pawling) pitched the final inning, allowing two runs on three hits.
The Setters travel to Springfield, MA for a three-game Northeast-10 Southwest Division series against the Yellow Jackets of American International College this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at noon and come back on Sunday, April 15 for one game starting at 1 pm.
