PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- The Setters got a pair of strong pitching performances in a doubleheader sweep over Saint Rose. Pace took the opener on a walk-off homerun in the ninth 2-1 and won the nightcap 3-1 in another close contest. The Setters improve to 13-10 overall, 5-3 in the Northeast-10 and 4-0 in the NE-10 Southwest. Saint Rose drops to 7-15, 1-7 in the NE-10 and 1-3 in the NE-10 Southwest.
In the opener, the Golden Knights took advantage of two pace errors in the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Setters answered in the bottom of the inning as Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) doubled to lead off the frame. Roemer advanced to third on a Kyle Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford) (Waterford, CT/Waterford) single. Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick) (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) fouled out to first base and Roemer sprinted home with the tying run.
The score remained tied at one until the bottom of the ninth as Charlie Galasso (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) stepped to the plate and blasted a one-out walk-off solo homerun to send the Setters to a thrilling game one 2-1 win over Saint Rose. Jonathan Hornung (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) was outstanding on the mound as he scattered three hits in a complete game effort. Hornung (1-2) struck out three in the victory.
In the nightcap, Pace took an early lead in the opening inning as Roemer singled and eventually came around to score on a Turner single. Saint Rose rallied in the fourth to tie the score at one.
Pace retook the lead in the fifth as Steve Sterlacci (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) led off with a single and moved to third on a Roemer double. Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) grounded out to score Sterlacci for a 2-1 Pace lead. The Setters added an insurance run in the eighth as Joe Solomeno (Holbrook , NY/Sachem East) (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) had an RBI single to drive in Chaputian.
On the hill for Pace, Neil Pezzullo (Harwich, MA/Harwich) (Harwich, MA/Harwich) tossed 8+ innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits and struck out five to improve to 3-0 on the season. Eddie Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepanic) came on in relief in the ninth and closed the door as he earned his second save of the season.
The Setters return to action for an NE-10 Southwest Division game against Adelphi University on Tuesday, April 3 at 3:30 pm at Pace's Finnerty Field.
