PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Pace baseball team split wins with the Skyhawks of Stonehill College in a Northeast-10 Conference and non-divisional match up. Pace took the first win 10-2 while the Skyhawks took the night cap at 9-7. Pace improves their record to 9-8 overall while Stonehill improves to 12-7 overall.
Both teams were scoreless through the first four innings before Joe Solomeno (Holbrook , NY/Sachem East) (Holbrook , NY/Sachem East) doubled and brought two runs in for the Setters. Stonehill scored a run in the sixth and one more in the eighth to tie it up at two. The Setters rallied with eight runs in the eighth inning to solidify the win. Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) drove in pair of runs with a single in the inning, while Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick) (Warwick, NY/Warwick) and Solomeno had two-run doubles as the Setters rallied with as big inning.
Solomeno went 3-for-5 with four RBI's and a run scored while Tyler Collins (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic) (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic) went 2-for-4, scored two runs and an RBI. Martineson and Chaputian went 2-for-5, scored a run and drove in two apiece.
Neil Pezzullo (Harwich, MA/Harwich) (Harwich, MA/Harwich) tossed for 6 2/3 innings, allowed just four hits and one run while striking out eight. Edward Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) pitched two innings, gave up three hits, no runs and struck out five to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Stonehill got on the board early in the second game as two players scored off of singles. Steve Sterlacci (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the third to put the Setters on the board. The Skyhawks answered with another run in the fourth and fifth to put them up three runs. Pace rallied in the fifth as Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) and Martineson got the Setters offense going with RBI singles. Collins then singled to center field and brought in Roemer and Chaputian before Charlie Galasso (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) topped it off with an RBI double to give Pace a 6-4 lead.
Stonehill answered back in the seventh inning to bring five more runs as the Skyhawks jumped out to a 9-6 lead. Collins recorded one of his two triples on the day to bring Solomeno home for the Setters in the seventh. The Skyhawks held on in the ninth inning as the Setters left a pair of runners on base.
In the nightcap, Collins went 3-for-5 with three RBI's while Roemer, Martineson and Galasso each added an RBI. Jonathan Hornung (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) threw for six innings, allowed nine hits, six runs and struck out two. Tom McIntosh (Stamford, CT/Stamford) tossed for three innings, allowed two hits and struck out three.
Pace hosts Bentley University on March 25 at 12:00 pm in a non-divisional conference match up at Pace's Finnerty Field.
