Setters Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Setters came up short to the Greyhounds of Assumption College 81-78 in Northeast-10 Conference action. Pace rallied in the second half but fell short in the final seconds as their record falls to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the NE-10. The Greyhounds improve to 5-0 and 3-0 in conference play.

The Greyhounds connected on four trifectas on the first eight minutes of the game as they built a 19-7 lead to open the game. Assumption led by as much as 37-14 with 4:24 left in the half but the Setters finished the half strong as they used a 13-4 run as they pulled to within 41-27 at the break.  

Assumption stretched their lead to 17 points at 59-42 with 12 minutes to play in the game. The Setters rallied back with an 18-4 run to pull to within three points at 63-60 with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Kai Smith (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) scored six points in the run, while Jonathan Merceus (Union, NJ/Union) (Union, NJ/Union) added four points.

The Greyhounds pushed their lead back to 10 points at 75-65 with 1:53 remaining in the game. The Setters battled back as they pulled to within two points at 80-78 on a pair of free throws by Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) with 17 second left in the game. After Assumption went 1-for-2 from the line, the three-point game-tying attempt by Primus-Devonish hit the rim as the Greyhounds held on for the three-point win.

For the Setters, Primus-Devonish led Pace with 19 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Merceus tallied 17 points, four rebounds and three assists. Smith finished with 10 points, while David Eismeier (Burke, VA/Bishop O'Connell) totaled three steals.

The Setters return to action on Wednesday, November 28 when they will host the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University at 7:30 pm at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
