SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Setters fell to Division I Syracuse University 99-63 in an exhibition contest played at the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University.
Pace got the opening tip-off and put up the first points of the game as lay-up by Keon Williams (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack/Iona College) (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack/Iona College) gave the Setters a 2-0 in the first minute of play. The Orange scored the next 16 points but newcomer Jaylen Mann (Youngstown, OH/Liberty) (Youngstown, OH/Liberty) connected on a triple at the 12:34 mark of the first half to pull the Setters to within 13 points at 20-7. Syracuse led by as many as 25 points at 35-10 but the Setters chipped away to trail 55-29 at the break.
Jonathan Merceus (Union, NJ/Union) (Union, NJ/Union) totaled eight points and eight rebounds in the half, while Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) added six points and three assists. Kai Smith (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) chipped in eight points, while freshman Salvatore Vitello (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) recorded three first half steals.
The Setters' David Eismeier (Burke, VA/Bishop O'Connell) (Burke, VA/Bishop O'Connell) hit a pair of trifectas to start out the second half for Pace. Eismeier connected on his third triple of the half with 9:14 left in the game to pull the Setters to within 78-52. The Orange extended their advantage to 90-59 with 5:26 left in the game and took the win.
For Pace, Merceus led the Setters with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Eismeier finished with 14 points. Primus-Devonish and Smith finished with 11 points each, while Ahmad George (Bowie, MD/Archbishop Carroll) added five assists. Vitello tallied five steals in the game.
The Setters officially open their 2012-13 season next Friday and Saturday, November 9 & 10 at the Nyack Tournament. Pace takes on host Nyack on Friday at 7 pm and play Bloomfield on Saturday at 4 pm.
