PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Setters came up short to the Hawks of Saint Anselm College 77-66 in Northeast-10 Conference action. Pace falls to 8-6 overall and 6-4 in the NE-10, while the Hawks improve to 6-8 and 4-6 in conference play.
The Hawks came on strong to start the game as they built an early 7-0 lead over the Setters. Pace answered to tie the score at nine. Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) scored five points, while Delroy Daley (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) converted a pair of lay-up to bring the Setters back. The Hawks held a slim lead, eventually taking a seven point lead at 24-17 with 6:09 left in the half. The Setters rallied as triples by Kai Smith (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) and Justin Alston (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) put the Setters in the lead at 25-24 with 4:40 remaining in the half. Saint Anselm rallied and took a 34-28 lead into the break.
Saint Anselm built an 11-point lead in the first two minutes of the second half but the Setters rallied with a 9-0 run to pull back to within two points at 40-38. Pace took a one-point lead at 46-45 on a three-point play by Jonathan Merceus (Union, NJ/Union) with 13:06 left in the game. The Setters added to their lead, eventually building a five-point advantage at 57-52 with 8:42 remaining in the game. The Hawks used a 21-6 run to take the lead, pulling ahead by 10 points with one minute to play. The Hawks converted 5-of-6 at the line in the final minute as the Setters saw their two-game winning streak end.
For Pace, Primus-Devonish led the Setters with 21 points, three rebounds and three assists, while Daley totaled 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Smith shot 3-for-5 from three-point range as he finished with 13 points and three rebounds. Merceus tallied 11 points and six boards for Pace.
The Setters return to action on Saturday, January 17 as Pace travels to Lowell, MA for Northeast-10 Conference game against UMass Lowell at 4:00 pm.
