PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- The Pace University women's basketball team fell to #14 Assumption College 70-56 in Northeast-10 Conference match-up. The Setters fall to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds, ranked #14 in the USA Today/ESPN Division Top-25 Coaches Poll, improves to 9-0 and -0 in conference play.
The teams played a close game midway through the opening half as the Setters held a slim 18-17 lead with 11:24 left in the half. Assumption would take the lead and pull ahead 26-19, eventually took an eight-point lead into the break at 34-26.
Assumption extended their halftime advantage in the lead half as they would pull ahead to a 45-34 lead with 13:54 left in the contest. The Setters rallied with an 11-2 run as Brittany Shields (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) got the Pace run going with a three-point play at the 13:27 mark. Allison Cleary (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall Central) (New Windsor NY/Cornwall Central) hit a key trifecta, while Carol Johnson (New City, NY/Cardinal Spellman) (New City, NY/Cardinal Spellman) also converted a three-point play in the run. Shields capped the run with 11:17 left in the game with a lay-up to pull the Setters to within two points at 47-45. The Greyhounds held off the Setter rally as they would push their lead to 63-47 with 4:27 left in the game and would take the win.
For Pace, Shields led the Setters with 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Cleary finished with nine points, while Maral Javadifar (Flushing, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) totaled nine points, six rebounds and three steals.
The Setters return to action on Friday, December 30 when Pace will host Saint Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference game at 1:30 pm at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
