PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y- Brittany Shields (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) led the Setters with a double-double for a thrilling come-back victory over the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas in non-conference action. Pace improves their record to 8-3 overall while the Spartans drop to 7-5 on the season.
St. Thomas Aquinas came out strong and maintained a decent lead throughout the first half. The Spartans led by as many as 16 at 33-17 with 2:51 left in the first half. Pace was able to come within ten points to head into halftime trailing 33-23.
The second-half proved more promising for the Setters as they opened up with a 10-4 run to pull within four points of the Spartans in the first four minutes. Saint Thomas Aquinas pushed their lead back to five points at 40-35 at the 12:06 mark but the Setters rallied with a 10-0 that would put them in the lead. Shields hit a pair of free throws and converted a three-point play with 9:30 left in the game to put the Setters ahead 42-40. Kerri White (Flushing, NY/Archbishop Molloy) (Flushing, NY/Archbishop Molloy) capped the run with a triple to extend the Setter lead to 45-40 with 8:57 remaining in the game.
The Spartans would battle back to tie the game twice down the stretch with the second tie coming at 56-56 with 33 seconds left. Shields hit 1-of-2 from the line with 13 seconds left, while Saint Thomas Aquinas would be called for a technical foul. White converted 1-of-2 at the line while Allison Cleary (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall Central) hit both of her free throws to ice the game and cap a big second half rally for the Setters.
For Pace, Shields led the way for the Setters with 25 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. White contributed 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Cleary finished with five points, three rebounds and three steals.
The Setters will travel to Colchester, VT for a Northeast-10 Conference match-up against St. Michael's College on Tuesday, January 3 for a 5:30 pm game.
