Setters Drop Heartbreaker Five-Set Match to Top-Seed New Haven in First Round of NCAA Tournament

WEST HAVEN, Conn.- The #8 seed Setters pushed the top-seeded New Haven Chargers to the limit but fell in dramatic fashion 3-2 (19-25, 27-29, 25-23, 25-19, 16-18). The Setters end the season at 20-11, while the Chargers improve to 22-6 and advances to the East Region semi-finals.

In the first set, New Haven jumped out to an 8-5 lead but the Setters answered with three straight points to tie the set at eight. The Chargers would pull ahead 18-12 but the Setters closed the gap to 22-18. New Haven scored the next two points and would take the first set 25-19.

In set #2, the team battled back and forth for most of the set as the Setters eventually took a 9-8 lead New Haven rallied with five unanswered points to pull ahead 13-9 and extended their advantage to 16-11. Pace answered with five straight points to tie the set at 16. Down the stretch the teams trades points and went into extra points as New Haven led 25-24 but the Setters rallied to take a 26-25 lead but New Haven would tie the set and eventually go on to win 29-27 in a thrilling second set.

In the third set, the teams against traded points in the early part as the teams would be tied at 10. Pace would use a four-point burst to lead 14-10, while the Chargers would eventually tie the score at 16. The team would again trade points but Pace would take an 18-17 lead before New Haven rallied to take a 20-18 lead. The Setters would answer to tie the score at 21 and would pull ahead 23-22. New Haven pulled back into a tie at 23 before Pace would net the final two points to win the third set 25-23.

In set 4, the Setters took control early in the set with leads of 14-9 and 18-11. New Haven closed the gap to 21-18 but the Setters rallied with three straight points to lead 24-18 and eventually won 25-19 to force a fifth set.

In the final set, the teams went back and forth in early action but the Chargers would take a 7-4 lead. The Setters would battle back tie the set at 12-12 and take a 14-12 lead. The Chargers rallied to tie the set at 14 and take a one point lead. Pace would answer the call, scoring the next two points to lead 16-15. The Chargers would rally with the next three points to take the final set 18-16 to cap a heartbreaking loss for the Setters.

Junior Nora Rugova (Mt. Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) (Mt. Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) led the Setters with 17 kills, three aces nd 21 digs, while senior Shea Hansen (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain) (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain) was outstanding in her final match in a Pace uniform with 59 assists and 17 digs. Tamilee Webb (Hartsdale, NY/Ardsley) (Hartsdale, NY/Ardsley) netted 16 kills, while Melanie Pavels (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) finished with 15 kills and 20 digs. Elyse Rowland (Antioch, CA/Deer Valley) tallied 31 digs along with three aces as the Setters totaled 14 aces as a team.
