Box Score Lowell, MA- In their second competition of the UMass-Lowell Classic Tournament the Pace men's basketball team won a non-conference matchup over the Eagles of Post University. With the win, the Setters improve to 2-0 overall, and 0-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Eagles fall to 0-2 overall and 0-0 in the CACC.
The Setters got off to a slow start when the Eagles went up on Pace 20-10 through the game's first 10 minutes. Things would not get much better for Pace throughout the first half. Despite solid play from big man Keon Williams (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack/Iona College) (Hackensack, NJ/Iona College) who would end the game with a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds, and one assist) the Setters would head into the locker room at halftime down 38-24. Also shining for the Setters was freshman Jonathan Merceus (Union, NJ/Union) (Union, NJ/Union) who just missed achieving double-double status as well with 13 points, nine rebounds, and one steal.
In the second half Pace would eventually cut the Eagles lead to six at the 16 minute mark with the score 38-32.
The second half saw a tremendous comeback for the Setters squad. Pace would continue solid play again cutting Post's lead to six with seven minutes left to play at 54-48. In the closing minutes the Setters were able to provide impressive play from many of their newcomers Jonathan Merceus (Union, NJ/Union), Keon Williams (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack/Iona College), and freshman Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) who would end the game with seven total points, and six assists. With three minutes to go in regulation the Eagles could not stop Pace's attack leading to many trips to the free throw line. Keon Williams (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack/Iona College) and Jonathan Merceus (Union, NJ/Union) would drain important free throws to close the Post lead to just one point 56-55. With 47 seconds remaining on the clock Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) would find a hole and drive for the game winning layup making the score 57-56.
The Setters return to action Wednesday, November 17 when they face off against Adelphi University for their first NE-10 showdown at 7:30 pm in Garden City, NY.
