SETTERS TO BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE NEXT SATURDAY AGAINST

PLEASANTVILLE, NY- Nathaniel Ford (Queens, NY/Jamaica) (Queens,
NY/Jamaica) capped off an eight-play, 57 yard drive with a
two-yard touchdown run to lift the Setters past the Greyhounds of
Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference game. The Setters
remain in a two-way tie for second place with Southern Connecticut,
improving their record to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the NE-10, while
the Greyhounds drop to 1-5 and 1-3 in conference play.
Assumption would fumble on the opening kickoff, giving the
Setters prime field position to start the game. Ray Gregg (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland)
(Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) would put Pace on the
board, hitting Ford out of the back field and Ford would take it in
for a 33-yard touchdown pass play and an early 7-0 Setter
advantage. The defenses would take over as the teams combined for
seven first half punts.
The Setters would extend their halftime lead on the opening
drive of the second half, as Gregg led a 5-play, 56-yard series,
capped off by a 27-yard touchdown strike from Gregg to Pat
Olchovy (Islip, NY/Islip).
Assumption would capitalize on a fumbled snap by the Setters,
recovering the ball at the Pace one-yard-line. After a loss of four
yards on the first play, quarterback Josh Ratacik would scramble
into the end zone to slice the Setter lead to 14-7 at the end of
the third quarter.
Pace would take the ensuing drive down to the Greyhound
18-yard-line where Assumption's Scott Bernard would block a 35-yard
field goal try by Ali Mourtada (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) (Foxboro,
MA/Foxboro). The Greyhounds would drive 59-yards, on seven
plays as Ratacik would connect with Joey Fabiano on a 13-yard pass
play to knot the game a 14 apiece.
The teams would trade punts and the Setter offense would take
over at their own 43-yard-line with 4:05 left in the game. Gregg
would once again rally the Setter offense and engineering yet
another fourth quarter winning drive. Gregg would hit Eric
Ortega (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) for a key third
down pass play on third down and later in the drive connected with
Andrew Kulak (Wolcott, CT/Wolcott) (Wolcott, CT/Wolcott) would a clutch
35-yard play in the air, setting up the Setters at the Assumption
seven-yard-line. Three straight runs by Ford, the final a two-yard
run, put the Setters back in the lead at 21-14 with 1:40 left in
the game.
The Greyhounds would not go quietly as Ratacik led a drive down
the field eventually getting to the Pace 16-yard-line before with
two seconds left. Ratacik final pass would be incomplete and the
Setters would snap their two-game skid and earn an important
conference victory.
Gregg finished 14-for-27 in the air for 206 yards and a pair of
touchdowns, while Ford hit triple digits on the ground, posting 106
rushing yards on 22 carries and the game-winning TD. Ford 100-yard
game was the Setters first since Reuben Sullins ran for 114 in
2005. Olchovy led the Setter receivers with four receptions for 51
yards.
Defensively, Greg Brain (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) (Westtown, NY/Minisink
Valley) led the Setters with 10 tackles, while Michael
LaMonica (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) tallied seven along with
a half sack.
The Setters return to action next Saturday, October 18 when they
battle for first place against Northeast-10 Conference foe American
International College in Springfield, MA set for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
