OPENER, 41-0
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University football team dropped
its 2007 home and conference opener to the Pioneers of Long Island
University - C.W. Post in Northeast-10 Conference football action
this afternoon at Pace Field on the Pleasantville campus of Pace
University. The Setters fall to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in the
NE-10, while the Pioneers improve to an even 1-1 overall and 1-0 in
conference play.
C.W. Post got on the board with their second possession of the
game as junior fullback Anthony Lazarus (South Ozone Park,
NY/Christ the King) capped off a five play-66 yard drive with a
four-yard touchdown run. The drive was highlighted by a 52-yard
completion as junior quarterback Nick Georgetti Holbrook, NY/St.
John the Baptist) hooked up with his senior wide receiver Chris
Bone Inwood, NY/Lawrence) to put the Pioneers inside the Pace
10-yard line, setting up the Lazarus touchdown run. Lazzarus
finished the game leading all rushers with 57-yards on 16 carries
to go along with his touchdown.
The visitors would put 10 more points on the board in the second
quarter, heading into the half with a 17-0 lead. Junior kicker
Andrew Kroell (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) connected on his first field
goal of the game from 39-yards out with 14:05 remaining in the
half. The Pioneers regained possession following a Pace field goal
attempt that was blocked by Maurice Baker (Hempstead,
NY/Kellenberg). Georgetti and Bone connected once again, this time
for a 45-yard touchdown reception to give the Pioneers the 17-point
half time advantage. Bone finished the afternoon leading all
receivers with six catches for 111 yards and a touchdown.
Kroell connected on his second field goal of the game, kicking
from a career long 45-yards out to give his team a 20-0 lead with
3:16 remaining in the third quarter. Baker would come up big once
again for the Pioneers defense as he recovered a fumble off of a
botched Pace option run, returning it 32-yards for the touchdown
with 2:12 remaining in the quarter. C.W. Post would go on to score
two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter on a two-yard touchdown
pass from Georgetti to Brian Clinton (Amityville, NY/Amityville)
and a 32-yard touchdown run from Frank Prochilo (North Massapequa,
NY/Plainedge).
Georgetti finished the game going 17-for-30 for 187 yards and a
pair of touchdowns. His counterpart junior Jeremy
Ducos (Richmond Hill, NY/John Adams) threw for 71 yards
going nine-for-31 with five interceptions.
Senior linebacker Joseph Streany (Croton, NY/Croton-Harmon) (Croton,
NY/Croton-Harmon) once again led the Setters defense
recording a game-high 19 total tackles (eight solo) to go along
with one tackle for a loss of two yards. Greg Brain (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley)
(Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) and Ricky McCollum (Newburgh, NY/UConn)
(Newburgh, NY/UConn) were also in double figure total
tackle numbers with 13 and 10 respectively. Nick Liguori (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South)
(Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) totaled a pair of sacks,
while Ernst Turnier (Stratford, CT/Bunnell) (Stratford, CT/Bunnell),
Patrick Finnegan (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) and
Gabe DeLeon (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) each
totaled one sack for a total of five sacks on the day for the Pace
defense.
The Setters return to action this Friday night, September
14th as Pace travels to Easton, MA to take on the
Skyhawks of Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Football play.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. C.W. Post is off next week as
it enters its bye.
