HUSSON, 25-13
JONES SETS SCHOOL RECORD WITH FOUR INTERCEPTIONS
BANGOR, ME -Jon Jones (Dover, NH/Bridgton
Academy) set a school record with four interceptions in
the Setters opening day non-conference loss to Husson College
25-13. Jones also scored a touchdown on a 58-yard interception
return. The Setters drop to 0-1 on the season, while Husson
improves to 1-0.
The Setters opened the game with the ball and fumbled on the
first play, which led to the Eagles getting on the board first with
a field goal. Midway through the opening quarter, after a penalty
backed the Setter offense to their own four-yard line. Husson
recorded a safety to take a 5-0 lead.
Late in the first quarter on a Setters punt, Eagles punt
returner Doug Blades lost control of the ball inside Husson's
10-yard-line and the Setters Joseph Streany (Croton, NY/Croton-Harmon) (Croton,
NY/Croton Harmon) recovered the fumble on the
two-yard-line. On the next play, Chris Castellano (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville)
(Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) scampered into the
end zone, giving the Setters their first lead of the game.
On the ensuing possession for Husson, the Eagles put together a
13-play, 90-yard drive to retake the lead as Bryan Ferguson scored
on a 4-yard touchdown run. On the drive, the Eagles had two pass
plays of over 25 yards to key the drive.
Following a Setter punt, the Eagles extended their advantage
using an 8-play, 74 yard drive, capped off by a three-yard run by
Julius Williams to take an 18-7 lead into halftime.
Momentum swung back to the Setters early in the third quarter on
the third pick of the day for Jones, who returned the interception
58 yards for the touchdown as the Setters climbed back to a five
point deficit at 18-13 as Pace failed to convert on the two-point
conversion.
Later in the third quarter, the Setters nearly broke up an
Eagles' drive on an apparent interception that was ruled
out-of-bounds, keeping the drive alive. With new life, Husson drove
down the field and scored the clinching score on the second
touchdown run of the day by Williams to put the score at 25-13 with
8:57 left in the third quarter.
Pace threatened one final time late in the fourth quarter as the
Setters drove to the Husson three-yard-line but four consecutive
incomplete passes denied the Setters a touchdown and the Eagles
were able to run out the clock for pick up the win.
The Setters offense struggled but Castellano rushed for 43 yards
on 15 carries and one touchdown. Quarterback Jeremy Ducos (Richmondhill, NY/John Adams)
Richmond Hill, NY/John Adams) tossed for 108 yards,
completing 9-of-39 and one interception. Matt Cooney (East Rockaway, NY/East Rockaway) East
Rockaway, NY/East Rockaway) hauled in four passes for 55
yards and also averaged 40.6 yards per punt, including two landing
inside the 20-yard-line.
Defensively, the Setters were led by Streany, who led both team
in tackles with 27 (11 solo), including 2.5 for losses of five
yards. Greg Brain (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley)
and Jones each totaled 11 total tackles in the game. The four
interceptions by Jones broke the previous record of three that was
done several times previously. The last three-interception game
came last season as Chris Anzano recorded three picks in a win over
Stonehill College on September 16th.
The Setters return to action when they host L.I.U. - C.W. Post
in the Setters Northeast-10 Conference opener on Saturday,
September 8th for 12:00 p.m. kickoff at Pace Field on
the Pleasantville campus.
